Old Time Radio Suspense
Old Time Radio (OTR) and the Golden Age of Radio refer to a period of radio programming lasting from the early 1920s the late 1950s and early 1960s. During this period, people regularly tuned in to their favorite radio programs. OTR Suspense brings back those wonderful suspenseful shows of the Golden Age.
Here are just a few of the suspenseful old radio shows featured.
Danger, Dr Danfield was first broadcast on August 18, 1946 and consisted of 26 episodes with the last one being April 13, 1947. It starred Michael Dunn as Dr. Danfield, with JoAnne Johnson as Rusty Fairfax, his secretary. This series consistently featured some of the worst acting and writing of any detective show to reach the airwaves!
The Mysterious Traveler was written and directed by Robert A. Arthur and David Kogan, and broadcast on the Mutual Broadcasting System from December 5, 1943 until September 16, 1952. The lonely sound of a distant locomotive heralded the arrival of the malevolent narrator, portrayed by Maurice Tarplin, who introduced himself each week in the following manner. "This is the Mysterious Traveler, inviting you to join me on another journey into the strange and terrifying. I hope you will enjoy the trip, that it will thrill you a little and chill you a little. So settle back, get a good grip on your nerves and be comfortable -- if you can!"
"Suspense" was one of the premier programs of the Golden Age of Radio, and advertised itself as "radio's outstanding theater of thrills." It was heard in one form or another from 1942 through 1962.
Gangbusters was an American dramatic radio program heralded as "the only national program that brings you authentic police case histories." It premiered as G-Men, sponsored by Chevrolet, on July 20, 1935. After the title was changed to Gang Busters January 15, 1936, the show had a 21-year run through November 20, 1957.
